Recap of 2024
I cannot believe how fast this year has flown! I feel like I’m barely catching up toward the New Year!… But I’m always amazed, too, to look back and see all that was accomplished:
In February, soprano Claire Fedoruk travelled to the UK and performed the World Premieres, at four separate concerts, of the song cycle I wrote for her, “Living the Aftermath.”
And, right at the start of 2024, I was thrilled to be preparing a performance of my 2008 electric violin concerto, “Leviathan of the Ancient Deep”, rearranged for the chamber group, the Andromeda Electric Orchestra! We had a successful performance of it on March 30!
That whole experience got me itching to create a fresh new recording of the full concerto with my new tech! I released the 2024 EP version of “Leviathan of the Ancient Deep” on May 1, and the EP even won a Silver Medal at the Global Music Awards!
Speaking of recordings, I’ve been on an adventure re-releasing remastered and/or re-recorded tracks. Check out all these refreshed recordings!
In mid-May, I had the opportunity to create and perform a super groovy solo piece for my 6-string electric violin with computer tracks and looping; thus “Round Peg Square Hole” was born! Naturally I had to create a new recording of this work for everyone to enjoy, too!
In June, I was thrilled to discover that two of my chamber works (“Nevermore” and “Of Roses and Lilies”, both found on my recent Navona release “Shards”) were chosen as National Finalists for the the American Prize Charles Ives Award — the ultimate result of that good news was that “Of Roses and Lilies” DID end up winning second place in the category for vocal chamber music!
During the summer, I decided to take the audio from my video lectures that I provide the asynchronous students who take my class, “History of Technology in Music”, and turn them into a weekly podcast. Not only is that an additional option for my busy students on the go (to listen to lectures on their commutes and such) but now anyone can enjoy these prerecorded lectures I regularly give on this super-fascinating and broad topic!
In September I FINALLY finished my setting of Psalm 47 for tenor Mitchell Sturges, after delaying for far too long. But it was worth it–I love how it turned out. There are now versions of the sheet music for tenor with piano or organ, mezzo-soprano with piano or organ, and soprano with piano or organ. And, of course, I released a quick recording of the mezzo-soprano version for all to hear….
In October I dropped two new recordings: “Crossing the Evening Sky” (for the ambient crowd) and “Samba Llena de Vida” featuring the fabulous Lydia Wu on piano (for classical violin and piano enthusiasts).
On November 15, my Christmas choral work, “Cradle Song (of Mary’s Beloved)” — recorded by the Grammy award winning choir, The Crossing — was released on Navona’s yearly holiday compilation, “Dashing Vol. 5”.
And finally, because I had a few unique renditions of wintery and holiday songs sitting lonely in my music catalog, I took some time to record and release them in late November on a charming little EP called “Winter Revelry“.
Believe me, there are already some big projects I’ve got in the works that I hope to finish up next year, so stay tuned!
In the meantime, though, I hope you’ll join me in taking it easy as we turn the page and ring in 2025.
