btw, after my experience with the FriendlyElec #NanoPi M4, I will be attempting to get and review the NanoPi M6 in the configuration shown: 16GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, metal case without LCD. it has "platinum" Armbian support last I looked.

some of these #SBC vendors have got their shit a lot more together than what I'm used to from Cubieboard days.

anyway, now that all that's done on the (version 1) #NanoPi M4, I can stress it with Youtube and the heat sink stays much cooler to the touch. and the fan does spool up as it gets warmer.

But it's not all failures. Some other customer sent in his NanoPi NEO 512. It a was nice, fast and easy fix - MP2143DJ IC got hot up to 150+° C, so I ordered and replaced it right away ✅.

wow, the #NanoPi M4 performs better and uses less CPU to display 1080p30 Youtube content in Armbian stable with kernel 6.12 than it does with the vendor OS images with their custom patched 4.x kernel. this is in Chromium, with LXQt desktop, which isn't an officially supported (as in installable via 'armbian-config') desktop environment for Armbian.

I guess all the drivers for the SoC and its Mali iGPU managed to make it in and get largely debugged since it was released in the late 2010s.

dug out the old dodgy NVMe stick I have, put it in the hat, now the #NanoPi boots just fine.

I swear it was booting with the hat and no NVMe stick populating it before, but I wouldn't bet my life on it because my memory, while better than a couple years ago during deepest burnout, still doesn't really record nearly as much detail as it used to.

anyway yay, all the setup I did earlier was probably not for naught, and I guess the eMMC is fine?

I'll likely move the root fs to NVMe in a while.

got the FriendlyElec hardware-accelerated Debian 11 desktop installed to eMMC on the #NanoPi M4. 802.11ac wifi is up. the fan on the heatsink isn't connected bc I can't find the controller, but right now it's barely warm to the touch anyway.

it runs their patched kernel 4.19 (I don't actually see a held package for this?) on a #Rockchip RK3399, dual 2GHz A72 + quad 1.5GHz A53, 4GB RAM.

no accelerated Debian 12 desktop from the manufacturer yet, but this'll display my calendar and to-do lists.

While I wait for a bit more sun before we can finally turn solarcene instance back on I've added a bit of info to the offline webpage.

If you go to solarcene.community and when the instance is offline you'll be able to see some of the stats.

I have a low powered #NanoPi which sits in front of the instance and manages traffic with #nginx so when the main instance is offline it can serve up a custom 502 page
