Yesterday, I cut down a dead ash tree, using branches to add to the ongoing dead hedge that's there to mark the line between the industrial agriculture going on in the field next door and our attempt at a wilding/ rewilding permaculture project.

Looking closely, I'm in awe of the fact that so often in #nature things that seem dead are not quite what they seem, as they give life to other organisms, like these fabulously florescent #lichens

On questions of human intervention/management and #wilding or #rewilding, the power and independence of #nature continues to amaze me.

Just over a year ago, my partner and I planted 500 trees and felt very pleased about it. Since then, we are constantly finding volunteer trees which have self-seeded with the help of birds and no help from us. Yesterday, I was amazed to find three walnut trees that I hadn't noticed - amazed because we don't have any walnut trees! #biodiversity #trees

Had great fun this morning watching a family of goldfinches. Mostly, the antics consist of the young ones perched on an electricity line and jostling to get the attention of mum or dad, tbh, not sure which. And then flying off in a posse to feast on a patch of nearby knapweed or thistle. I can now see why the collective noun for goldfinches is a 'charm'. #birds #nature #biodiversity #permaculture #wilding #rewilding

Tragically, what it says is just as true in rural Normandy where I am now, as I watch employees of the Commune strip grass verges down to bare earth with giant tractor mowers, and farmers spray anything that doesn't look like a crop at the edges of their fields with herbicide. #nature #biodiversity #environment #permaculture #wilding #rewilding #insects #pollinators

Yesterday, once the mist cleared, more work on the dead-hedge which was begun way back in January of this year.

In case anyone hasn't come across the idea, the hedge is dead in the sense that the branches are not living, but it's still a good habitat for birds, invertebrates and small mammals, as well as a good way of marking a boundary and limiting the drift of pesticides across from the neighbouring industrial farmland.

Not the biggest fan of industrial agriculture with its destruction of hedges and habitats and routine use of chemical agents to purge the soil of nutrients and essential wildlife, but just sometimes, in the early morning, when the mist comes, which it does often in Normandy....
