There are no rabbits in Tiree

A short essay on the pitfalls (and some of the advantages) of wilding (frequently a mistake) and rewilding (good if done properly - and that doesnb't include feral pigs in the Caringorms whichever gormless twat did it).

‘Wilding’

Based on Isabella Tree’s best-selling book, #Wilding tells the incredible story of a young couple who bet on nature for the future of their failing, 400-year-old estate. They set to work with their ground-breaking vision, battling entrenched tradition and major forces along the way, daring to place the fate of their farm in the hands of nature.

Ripping down the fences, they set the land back to the wild, entrusting its recovery to a motley mix of animals, both tame and wild. So began a grand experiment that will become one of the most significant rewilding experiments in Europe and beyond.

Yesterday, I cut down a dead ash tree, using branches to add to the ongoing dead hedge that's there to mark the line between the industrial agriculture going on in the field next door and our attempt at a wilding/ rewilding permaculture project.

Looking closely, I'm in awe of the fact that so often in #nature things that seem dead are not quite what they seem, as they give life to other organisms, like these fabulously florescent #lichens

On questions of human intervention/management and #wilding or #rewilding, the power and independence of #nature continues to amaze me.

Just over a year ago, my partner and I planted 500 trees and felt very pleased about it. Since then, we are constantly finding volunteer trees which have self-seeded with the help of birds and no help from us. Yesterday, I was amazed to find three walnut trees that I hadn't noticed - amazed because we don't have any walnut trees! #biodiversity #trees

A pic of my favourite #banksy, sprayed - in every sense of the word - on a wall very near where I used to live in London.

Tragically, what it says is just as true in rural Normandy where I am now, as I watch employees of the Commune strip grass verges down to bare earth with giant tractor mowers, and farmers spray anything that doesn't look like a crop at the edges of their fields with herbicide. #nature #biodiversity #environment #permaculture #wilding #rewilding #insects #pollinators

Yesterday, once the mist cleared, more work on the dead-hedge which was begun way back in January of this year.

In case anyone hasn't come across the idea, the hedge is dead in the sense that the branches are not living, but it's still a good habitat for birds, invertebrates and small mammals, as well as a good way of marking a boundary and limiting the drift of pesticides across from the neighbouring industrial farmland.

Trophic pyramids destroyed by our fear of insects and distaste of weeds; nervous system toxin and genetic damage to all life; distributed throughout our soil and waterways: leading to widespread death of birds, bees, fish, livestock, crops, and humans; accompanied by cellular and chromosome destruction, mutagenic and chromosomal abnormalities, and massive increases in cancer -

Paul Hermann Müller's Nobel Prize should in turn be revoked & granted to Carson (in addition to her 1981 Presidential Medal of Freedom). Müller was awarded Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1948 "for his discovery of the high efficiency of DDT as a contact poison against several arthropods" in 1939. What he neglected to recognize until at least 1972 when DDT was banned, was that these biocides -

Rachel Carson should be granted a retroactive Nobel prize for her 1962 work Silent Spring. And Silent Spring should be required reading by every high school or secondary school student

and to your question - yes, I first learned of this book only through the book The Three-Body Problem by Chinese author Liu Cixin, published in 2008
