The hype I am seeing for "refurbished" or "renewed" hard drives for NAS usage seems like false economy to me. These drives need to be a heaps cheaper than they are to be the bargain that youtubers and tech blogs are saying they are. Some of these drives have in excess of 10,000 power on hours. It's been spinning for over a year and you're paying 80% of the original price?!

No thanks

Success. It turns out that when you actually install all of the dependencies of your CNI plugin, control plane nodes on a Raspberry Pi 4 come up without any issue at all. 🤦

What was missing was installing "linux-modules-extra-raspi", which is something specifically shouted out by Cilium's docs. I initially wasn't sure what the problem was, because my Pi 4 worker nodes worked just fine. But they netboot and need the package for Ceph support. But my CP nodes have local storage.

Aight.. So.. After fucking with this thing for the better part of the week in the #homelab. I have thoughts.

#seaweedfs! Feels like an open-source project. It's aight so far, it's not as simple as you would think with it being one go binary, it's simple with one go binary. Feels like that nerdy ass teenager you knew about in high school. Fucked with the cool kids and was super smart.. Just never really felt like they were part of the crew! Yea this feels like that!

#moosefs Feels like a product! It's robust, I never really had to fuck with it after setup, solid way of getting shit done, been around for ever.. You gotta pay for the exra shit tho!... It feels like that plastic lining your grandma had on her couches! Fucking old, but that shit was always clean! This felt like grandma's house!

@andy_warb That #Unraid is listed by Wikipedia as "closed-source with open source components" but #TrueNAS Community Edition is listed as LGPL-3.0 on Debian (and TrueNAS Core as BSD license on FreeBSD) would very much steer me toward TrueNAS unless you have specific requirements that would suggest Unraid fits the bill better.

I'm very slowly starting to properly architect my network with VLANs. First successful endeavor was creating a VLAN 20 network tied to a segmented part of my wifi.
This way I have a single SSID but if guests join my network, they're given a separate password that puts their device in an isolated VLAN.

I could've just created a guest network but then I'd have "Network" and "Network Guest" visible and that isn't as clean.
Microsegmentation DOES disable the 6Ghz band but nothing on my network supports that so if that time comes where they even benefit from 6Ghz, I'll swap back to a Guest network solution

I'm using the Vultr node as a public ingress for the big worker nodes at home. Convincing an ingress to not need a load balancer is tricky! I thought I had it but then overnight last night metallb decided to give it an internal ip, which is just no good. #Kubernetes #HomeLab

So far I have avoided committing any crimes with this thing and I'd like to continue avoiding them as long as possible. The one interesting thing is that I set it up as hybrid cloud from the start.

I have three (3) small Talos VMs on three different Proxmox servers in the house acting as the control plane, along with one larger worker VM. I also added a worker node at Vultr after activating the Talos KubeSpan mesh networking thing. It has been completely seamless after I figured out how to make a second ingress-nginx install that doesn't need a load balancer. #Kubernetes #HomeLab

I've been heads down for a while working on a huge update to Home Cloud and I just published a big milestone PR which implements a substantial portion of what makes Tailscale a $1.5 billion dollar business. This PR completes an end-to-end Wireguard tunnel which is fully peer-to-peer so that your Home Cloud server is accessible from anywhere in the world with full security and privacy.

Yeah, it looks like running a k8s control plane on a Raspberry Pi 4 with an attached SATA SSD is a "nope". I don't even know what's going on, but I'm pretty sure my firewall should never, ever be seeing (and blocking) Pod subnet traffic.

My JetKVM DC power extension came in. I ordered it before the splitter was to be included.

I don’t think i have a use for the DC power extension at this point.

Still cheaper than competitive solutions. And I’ve gotten pretty good use out of the JetKVM at this point.

I have more use of it in the immediate future as I plan some minor changes to my homelab.

So I have this thing and I’m not sure if I need it now.

In any case, JetKVM is really good for homelabs. Check it out.
