As I lie in bed awake with a bout of transient insomnia, as I seem to have frequently these days, I find myself thinking that my late-night posts here seem somewhat like the work of my own inner Tyler Durden, from the 1996 novel and 1999 film #FightClub .

I think that the film really deserves more attention, despite the character's line, "The first rule of fight club is you do not talk about fight club."

I recall the film being very good, but falling apart in the third act leading to a disappointing finale.

Anyone want to talk about it?

Last night I listened to podcaster David Runciman and journalist Helen Lewis talking about Fight Club, and how it holds up 25 years later;

The political aspect of the discussion exemplified a common lack of understanding among the political class, about what fascism really is and how it works. One that I also lacked when I first watched the film, about 20 years ago.

The Great Political Films: Fight Club w/ Helen LewisPast Present Future

Around 2000, I knew a guy who started his own Fight Club. I know because he talked about it (ironic) and because he'd show up covered in bruises and cuts. He knew I was a martial artist and invited me to join. I wanted nothing to do with it. I didn't study martial arts to beat people up or to be beaten up.

One day he showed up with a huge lye burn on his arm.

He is one of those folks who missed the point of a cautionary tale.

I think that awful burn was what finally snapped him out of it, but yikes.

And yeah. I know how to make soap out of rendered animal fats and wood ash. If push comes to shove, pressing sunflower and olive oil (and coconut and palm) is way harder than rendering animal fat. Just saying. I know how to make soap out of things around me. And without soap, societies collapse pretty quickly.

25 years later and I'm reading #FightClub again. I shouldn't talk about it but I'm convinced that Marla is Tyler's third personality. She represents his feminine side. The yin to Tyler's yang.

The reason she survives at the end is because Tyler decided to embrace the devine feminine and snipped his balls to live, and maybe beat the cancer.

This is the greatest moment of your life. Come back to the pain. #fuckCancer
