Speaking as a US citizen, Canada buying the F-35 is one of the most inexplicable things I've ever seen. The reason the US bought F-35s was as a workfare project for Lockheed. But Canada, *you* have no incentive to stimulate the Texas economy by buying a product that doesn't work. I don't care if Justin already paid for some of them. Just drop it and walk away. It will cost you more to maintain the useless things than it will to just buy something else.
@mcc We have an excellent company called SAAB here in the Nordics, which produces a jet fighter specially designed for northern latitutes called the JAS-39 Gripen.
Canada should check it out. Here is the brochure, in case you’re in the mood for some online shopping

The SAAB Gripen was included in the competition along with the offerings from Boeing and Lockheed-Martin.

The technical capabilities of it are well known, and an advantage of it over the F35 is Canada won’t need to buy helicopters for potential recovery operations in the far north.
It has already been named in discussions, the US F-35 will not be bought any further.
@gimulnautti @mcc AFICR the Gripen has STOL although not VTOL but 2/3 of the F-35 are also not VTOL and the Merkin jets are fussier about FOD as well as a rule. Am I right? It's a very nice plane!
