One thing I absolutely love using ChatGPT for is creating alt text for images in my posts. Alt texts are usually supposed to be short and sweet so they're easy to review before posting. Spot on use case that improves accessibility online
@abesamma It's so hard to take a firm position on technology that's 95% evil and 5% irreplaceably useful. Can we just keep the 5% please
@siblingpastry as always, it all depends on design choices and the choices AI practitioners make. I think it is possible to have ethical AI models and services if we decide to actually build them and "sell" the idea's merits and advantages. Otherwise we risk leaving this space and the direction it takes entirely in the hands of the tech bros.
@abesamma Absolutely, accessibility is the one area where AI can offer unique benefits, like the ability to describe visual information on demand. It's fantastic.
It's all the other stuff, the nonsense cited as fact, the post-truth discourse that it supports, the mass denigration of creative art to the status of probability data. Not to mention the environmental/resource cost.
Futurism always imagined machines that free us to be creative, not to churn out derivative mockeries of our freedom.
